Famous Beaches of Kefalonia
The beautiful island of Kefalonia is mostly famous for its beaches. Entire the outline of island is full of small or big creeks with enormous variety.
Sandy beaches or with pebble and rock, always clean and ready to welcome you and satisfy every taste. Nevertheless each municipality allocates many blue flags, reward for clean beaches, and various points that could constitute ideal place for swimming.
Below we present some of the most famous, while their complete recording it is practically impossible. We propose visiting the more you can.
Porto Atheras
Two kilometers along the village atheras there is a small beautiful sandy beach Porto Atheras. At the left of the beach there is a small blue church by the name St. Spyridon.
The port of Athera is a paradise for all the fishermen amateur or not because of the passing. In the middle of the gulf there is a small island. There are a lot of birds flying overhead and use the island as sanctuary
Xi beach
It is a well organized beach which is also honored with the blue flag by the Hellenic Company of the protection of nature. This beach is next to “Megas Lakos” beach. The warm, shallow water at this beach is particularly suitable for little children. Opposite to this beach there is a well-shaped desert island called “Vardiani”, the best place for funs of fishing.
Lepeda beach
This beach which is south of Lixouri, has red sand a dark coloured rock in the middle. You can play volleyball or other sports or even walk to the known monastery-cave of St. Friday. This is the cave where holy Anthimos Kourouklis led a hermit’s life. Nowadays, the monastery has been abandoned but you can see and admire the old gate of the monastery and its ruined interior.
Petani beach
This is one of the largest and most beautiful beaches of the island. The white sand and the deep blue sea make this beach the ideal place for those who like scuba-diving. The local people also call the beach “Xoura’s beach”, named after an old man who first opened a little tavern by the beach. The old man no longer lives however you can still enjoy fresh sea-food and fish at his tavern.
Mega Lakos beach
This beach which is south of Lixouri, has red sand a dark coloured rock in the middle. You can play volleyball or other sports or even walk to the known monastery-cave of St. Friday. Platia Ammos beach
After you visit at the Monastery of Kipouria and on your way to Kaminarata, you will find a long, lovely beach called Platia Ammos. Until now one could only visit the beach using a boat but now stairs were made and the visitor can enjoy swimming in the clear – crystal water of this beach.
Vrahinari – Vatsa beach
The scenic bay of Vrahinari, with sand and pebbles, is a span of 200m. At the south coast of the area, at the place Vatsa, is a bay called Vrahinari. The archeologists confirm as true the belief of the existence of Neptune’s temple.
Lagadakia
The seaside of Lagadakia is a lonely pebbly bay with a span of just 70m. Lagadakia is a wonderful beach with light green diaphanous water. It’s a scenery that differs from the rest environment, as it looks like an attractive and peaceful sweep in the middle of wild rocks
